CLAYTON — Johnston County sheriff’s deputies have arrested the third suspect in a teenager’s July 13 shooting death.
James Sonnett Brodie Jr., 23, of Avery Street in Garner, was apprehended without incident July 31 in Morrisville. Town police and State Bureau of Investigation agents assisted with the arrest.
Brodie was charged with first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He is being held in the Johnston County Detention Center in Smithfield.
A dispute over drugs may have led to the assault and killing, Capt. Jeff Caldwell of the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
Deputies were dispatched to a shots-fired call at 103 Blackthorn Court outside Clayton at 1:39 a.m. July 13. They arrived to find 15-year-old Kaylen Marion Middleton dead at the scene due to a gunshot wound.
A 20-year-old, Desmond Tyrese Barnes of Clayton, was shot in the foot. Barnes was treated and released from the hospital.
Authorities said three young men were seen speeding away after the shooting.
Detectives identified one of the suspects as Joshua Caleb Draughon, 18, of Garner. Draughon was charged July 15 after Johnston County authorities learned he had been jailed in Wake County on unrelated charges.
The second suspect, 19-year-old Quashaad Powell, turned himself in to Wake County authorities the following day.
Draughon, Powell and Brodie are charged with one count each of first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
