Church to hold book, bake sale
FOUR OAKS — Four Oaks United Methodist Church, 302 N. Church St., will hold its annual book and bake sale from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4 and Thursday, Sept. 5; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7; and from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8.

State insurance commissioner to visit
SMITHFIELD — N.C. Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Causey will visit the Johnston County Emergency Operations Center, 1230 S. Third St., at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5. County spokeswoman Paulette Williams said Causey will meet with state and local officials and representatives of Johnston County Emergency Services and local fire departments.
Amateur radio exams offered
SELMA — The Five-County Volunteer Examiner Team will offer free Federal Communications Commission amateur radio licensing exams at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Thanksgiving Fire Department, 2375 Thanksgiving Road.

Writers group to meet in new location
SMITHFIELD — The Johnston County Writers Group will meet from 6-7:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12 at the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield, 305 E. Market St. Wanda Robinson Lee, author of the autobiography “God’s Voice: Choices That Led My Journey,” will serve as guest speaker.
The group has shifted locations to the Smithfield library and previously held its meetings in Selma. Members meet on the second Thursday of each month. Guests are welcome and admission is free.
