SMITHFIELD — The Johnston Regional Airport will receive $234,000 in state and federal funding to conduct an environmental assessment for planned development, the N.C. Department of Transportation announced last week.
The state transportation board approved nearly $7 million in funding for upgrades at a dozen North Carolina airports during its July meeting.
The largest slice of the pie was $3 million for an expansion project at the Avery County Airport outside Newland in western North Carolina. Closer to home, the Raleigh Executive Jetport in Sanford will receive $117,000 to clear obstructing trees from runway approaches.
Funds awarded to each airport do not necessarily represent total project costs, state officials said in a news release.
The NCDOT says the state’s 72 public airports along with aviation-related industries pump more than $52 billion into the state’s economy each year, supporting 307,000 jobs, generating more than $2.2 billion in tax revenue and proving more than $12.6 billion in personal income.
