CAMDEN — The Princeton High varsity softball team showed its youth in game 1 of the of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1-A softball East Regional finals series against Camden County, losing 1-0.
The Lady Bulldogs head coach Don Andrews believes that nervousness and the Lady Bruins pitcher Hailey Bunting affected their offense. The No. 2 seed Lady Bulldogs (14-3), champions of the 1-A Carolina Conference, mustered two hits and two walks against Bunting. Sophomore Gracelyn Massey and junior Reanna Braswell got the two hits.
Massey gave up seven hits and two walks in six innings of work for the loss. The No. 1 seed Lady Bruins (25-1), champions of the 1-A Albemarle Conference, scored the lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore Hannah Ferebee’s sacrifice bunt brought junior Skylar Hyatt in from third base. Bunting had seven strikeouts for the win.
Princeton will face elimination in Thursday’s game 2, which will be in Princeton at 6 p.m. If necessary, the Lady Bruins will host game 3 on Friday at 6 p.m.
