KENLY — The North Johnston High boys tennis team clinched the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference title with two wins over SouthWest Edgecombe at home on Friday, April 12.

After defeating the 2018 champion Nash Central 6-3 Thursday night, the Panthers (11-7, 7-0 EPC) entered the doubleheader needing two conference wins to clinch the title. North Johnston turned back the Cougars (3-8, 2-5 EPC) 6-0 and 9-0.

“These young men have worked so hard for this,” North Johnston head coach David Anderson said. “We came so close last year, and that just motivated them to work harder. I have never seen them play as well as they did against Nash Central. They were so poised and tough. Even the guys that didn’t win their match fought to the final point.”

On Friday, the Panthers allowed just nine points in the 15 matches. North Johnston senior Brandon Peedin and junior Scott Sellers both won all three of their matches without allowing a single point.

The Panthers have one more match against Farmville Central before the conference tournament on Wednesday.

The championship is North Johnston’s second in three years. The Panthers were one-and-done last year in the playoffs but hope, if they keep up the play which has won them 11 of their last 14 matches, that they make some noise in 2019.
