SMITHFIELD — Mayor Andy Moore installed two new police officers during the April 9 town council meeting.

Joseph Phillip Heck was hired to fill a vacancy within the department’s patrol division. Heck comes from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office based in Snow Hill, where he served 15 years.

The other officer sworn in was Damon Kenny. Kenny was hired to fill a current vacancy and completed his basic law enforcement training at Johnston Community College.

Moore welcomed both officers to the Smithfield community.
