Gladys Faye Barnes Slaughter

Gladys Faye Barnes Slaughter passed away on March 16, 2017 at the age of 94. She was the daughter of the late Tony and Marie Barnes of Kenly, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Tom Slaughter, a granddaughter Dr. Anna Woodall Hudson and two sisters.
Mrs. Slaughter was a retired probation officer for the state of NC. She was one of the first 5 female probation officers hired in the state. She served as a probation officer for 25 years until she retired.
She was an active and vital member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wilson for over 50 years. She served as a deacon, an elder, a Sunday school teacher, a circle bible moderator, and was named Outstanding Older Adult by the NC Presbytery.
Mrs. Slaughter also faithfully served her community. She was on the board of directors for the Hattie Daniels Day Care, the board of directors for the Flynn Christian Fellowship Home, delivered Meals on Wheels, served in the soup kitchen, was a tutor for elementary students and transported impaired adults to appointments. She was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. James B. Hunt, Jr. for her service to the state and her community.
She is survived by her daughters, Marie Hazlett and her husband Jim Hazlett, Sara Woodall and her husband Dr. Hal Woodall, and Susie Walker. She is also survived by five granddaughters, Katie Wang and her husband Enoch, Kristin Mayfield and her husband Bud, Sara Woo and her husband Jansen, Lisa Nemeth and her husband John, Lori Medlin and her husband Stephen. In addition she is survived by a brother Tommy Barnes and 13 great grandchildren.
One of Gladys’ favorite bible verses was Isaiah 40:31, “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.” Truly Gladys walked with Christ in her heart for 94 years. Gladys was one of those rare individuals who was loved and admired by all who knew her. Everyone, young and old, called her friend.
A graveside memorial and celebration of her life will be held Saturday, March 25th at 11:00 am at the Kenly Cemetery, Kenly, NC. After the service family will receive at the graveside.
The family is being served by the Kenly Funeral Home.
