A former “American Idol” contestant was arrested Sunday night in Selma for driving while impaired.
Lamar Royal auditioned for “American Idol” during the 2010 season but didn’t make the cut.
Selma Police pulled over Royal, 28, of Goldsboro at 8:17 p.m. on U.S. 70 at Ricks Road on South Pollock Street and made a wide left and struck the curbing to the inside lane.
Police said Royal then attempted a wide right turn onto U.S. 70, went into the turn lane in the highway with half his car in the turn lane and half in the path of oncoming traffic.
Police said he weaved from lane to lane and police made a traffic stop. Police said Royal abruptly hit his brakes and the officer had to slam on his brakes. Royal then pulled into the BP convenience store parking lot.
Royal told the police he was texting and not bothering anyone. The officer said he detected a strong odor of alcohol and that Royal’s eyes were bloodshot and glassy.
As he was exiting the vehicle, according to police, and said, “Don’t you put your hands on me. If you put your hands on me, we will march.”
According police, at one point Royal became angry and said, “I am Lamar Royal. I was on season 10 of ‘American Idol.’ I have money. You don’t mess with me.”
After failing three sobriety tests and blowing 0.14, Royal was told he was under arrested for driving while impaired.
Royal replied, “Do you know who I am? I am a millionaire, you mean nothing to me. I was on ‘American Idol.’”
Then Royal tried to sing “Kiss From a Rose” by Seal. He was processed at the Selma Police Department and transported to the Johnston County Jail where he was held on a $25,000 secured bond.
His trial date is Sept. 12.
