With Pine Level’s Playmates Childcare and Development Center growing by leaps and bounds, owner Tonia Hill said to meet demand the business had to expand.

Ground was broken last Tuesday, Aug. 22, for a new facility on property located directly in front of Pine Level Town Hall just off U.S. Highway 70A.

“We are hoping to be open by May or June of 2018,” said Hill.

General contractor for the project is T. L. Casey Construction Inc. of Smithfield.

Hill said the new building is coming not a minute too soon as the current center at 115 W. Pine St. has outgrown its capacity of 153 and is “past full.”

Playmates Childcare had been in Pine Level for almost 20 years when Hill purchased the business in June 2011.

Hill said the staff at that time included herself, center director Angie Rollins and five other employees, all of whom are still there.

“About three years into it we bought a modular building large enough for 50 more kids but our enrollment was already over-capacity even before we officially opened,” said Hill.

The three buildings now being used contain nearly 9,000 square feet while the new facility will have 23,000 square feet.
