The state Department of Transportation has several major projects underway in Johnston County.

Jiles Harrell, Johnston and Wayne counties division engineer, updated more than 200 business and community leaders at the Nov. 29 Johnston County Economic Development luncheon held at the Johnston County Agricultural Center.

The main topic was steps being taken by the NCDOT to upgrade U.S. 70 to interstate standards for its conversion to Interstate 42. Harrell said the goal is to eliminate all stoplights on U.S. 70 between Garner and Morehead City.

Harrell said that project, Pine Level interchange upgrades on U.S. 70 and U.S. 70 Business, should be completed by early 2018. Interchanges are being constructed at Davis Mill and Stevens Chapel roads.
