The North Carolina Highway Patrol has cited a truck driver carrying 38,000 pounds of strawberries in an early morning accident Wednesday on I-95 north near the Bagley Road exit ramp in Kenly.
Highway Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Michael Baker said the collision occurred within a work zone, although work wasn’t in progress at the time.
Baker said the driver, whose name hasn’t been released, was cited for exceeding the posted speed limit One lane of I-95 northbound was closed near the collision scene while heavy wreckers recovered the vehicle.
Troopers were dispatched at 3:42 a.m. to the scene. The accident slowed traffic during the morning and early afternoon hours.
According to NC Highway Patrol 1st Sgt. Derek Mobley, the driver was uninjured. The driver told troopers on the scene that someone ran him off the interstate.
The truck, heading from Florida to Massachusetts, drove off the northbound lanes and rolled down a muddy embankment and stopped at the tree line.
While the truck was heavily damaged, troopers on the scene said the truck’s refrigeration system was still operating, keeping the strawberries fresh.
The highway was narrowed to one lane as crews worked to pull the truck back up the hill. A wrecker removed the truck early this afternoon and troopers said all that’s left is to repair the guard rail.
