Samantha Barnes, physical education teacher at Glendale-Kenly Elementary School, has been named as the school’s recipient of “Leading with the Heart” honors by Johnston County Schools  “for going above and beyond in and outside of the classroom.”

The recognition, inspired from Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyewski’s book, “Leading with the Heart,” recognizes employees throughout the school system that demonstrate leadership, compassion and heart on a daily basis.

Barnes, daughter of Rev. Tim (Micro First Baptist Church) and Linda Stevens, is a 2002 graduate of North Johnston High School where she played softball for four years and was on the cross-country and indoor track team for four years.

She received her BS degree from East Carolina University in education.

Barnes taught eight years at Corinth-Holders Elementary and prior to that was a teacher assistant at the same school for three years.
