Johnston County officials explain board meeting rescheduling

Todays’s Johnston County Board of Education meeting scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 13 has been rescheduled due to “inclement weather.” This decision was made in spite of fair skies and melted ice, creating no ice threat on the roadways.

School officials explained the rationale behind their decision.

School Board Chairman Mike Wooten said, “Unfortunately with employees involved with this meeting as well as students not a sound decision to have the meeting and putting them at risk with school closed for student and employees.”

“Rescheduling for next Tuesday.  Dr. Renfrow makes his decision based on weather experts and stakeholders in our area. Can’t get them all right all the time but rest assured we will err on the side of safety in all our decisions no matter if we are right or wrong. I support be decision 100 percent,” said Wooten.

Chief of Communications and Engagement Crystal Roberts said  the board meetings are meetings are public.

“A big part of  those meetings are the recognition public recognitions  for students and staff and in these conditions not everyone’s readily available. We’d rather have every student there than have one or two missing. We want to to keep it standard and that’s our practice.”

Roberts said the board meeting is part of the school district and when the district is closed, that includes board of education meeting.

“We’ve been in constant contact with the Highway Patrol and they said we made the right call regarding today’s closing,” said Roberts. “‘Rescheduling the school board meeting is all part of being compassionate and  considerate.”

Public Information Officer Tracy Peedin Jones said, “School was closed today prior to 6:00 a.m. Due to the road conditions; therefore the the Board meeting was cancelled and has been rescheduled.

On Monday, March 11 at 9:06 p.m., Peedin Jones said the original plan was for a three-hour delay today for Johnston County students, faculty and staff.
