Portrait unveiling Thursday AT NJHS

Anticipation is building at North Johnston High School for Thursday evening’s unveiling of individual portraits of former North Johnston principals.

They will be unveiled and dedicated during a 7 p.m. ceremony in the school auditorium.

All guests who have a connection with the North Johnston community are invited, said North Johnston Principal Dr. Ben Williams.

Following the ceremony, a reception will be held in the school cafeteria.

The portraits were taken at the school during the week of Feb. 19-23 by photographer Chuck Hardison of Pine Level.

They will later be displayed in the front lobby of the school.

“This project came out of a conversation with school staff and community members earlier in the year regarding ways to connect North Johnston High School with the school’s rich history and tradition,” said Williams. “The portraits will serve as a reminder of the leadership of the school throughout the years.”

North Johnston High School opened its doors in 1965 with the first principal being Ben Strifert who served until 1993.

Strifert’s portrait was donated to the school by his widow, Margie Strifert, and will also be among the portraits displayed.

Strifert was followed in order by Gary Carter who began as co-principal with Strifert and later became principal, 1992-1996;  Linda Stevens, 1996-97; Butler Hall, 1997-2003; Ross Renfrow 1993-2009; Ed Holmes, 2009-2010; Tim Harrell, 2010-2015; David West, 2015-2017; and Ben Williams, 2017-current.
