GREENSBORO—North Johnston girls basketball coach Jay Poole represented the Panthers as the assistant coach for the East all-stars last week in the N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star game held at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Poole joined Swansboro head coach Kim Miller in leading the East all-stars last Monday night in the 43rd annual contest. The West all-stars took the 95-81 win but that didn’t dampen the experience at all for the veteran coach who took over at North Johnston in 2011 after a long stint at Leesville Road High School.

“The only thing, if you even want to say, that was a negative was we lost the game,” Poole said when reflecting back on the experience. “Just to be there was a positive experience. The group we assembled were everything we thought they were. They were a joy to coach and teach.”

Assembling that group was a process that began last Christmas break when Poole first met Miller and began evaluating prospects for the team at Christmas tournaments. If the duo couldn’t watch players who were nominated by their coaches in person, the pair requested and poured over game footage and consulted with one another in assembling the squad.
