Wayne County Public Schools will hold a School Bus Driver Application/Information Fair on Friday, Aug. 17 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. The event will be held at the Wayne County Public Library, located at 1001 E. Ash Street. The district’s Transportation Department will have staff on hand to answer questions and to help applicants take the first steps towards becoming a school bus driver.
“If you are seeking flexible hours and have an interest in driving school buses to support education, we would encourage you to come out to this application event,” states Robert Lee, WCPS transportation director. “Our transportation team is ready to share information about the requirements to be a school bus driver and help get applicants signed up for our upcoming school bus driver training class to begin September 17.”
In North Carolina, school bus drivers must possess a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with a” P” and “S” endorsement. To obtain, applicants must complete the district’s school bus driver training program, which consists of three days of classroom instruction and three days of behind-the-wheel training. They must also pass a written examination administered by the DMV School Bus & Traffic Safety Section of NC. The starting salary for a WCPS school bus driver is $14.19 per hour.
The WCPS School Bus Driver Application/Information Fair will be held in the library’s Gertrude Weil Auditorium. For more information, interested applicants can call 919-705-6080.
