PRINCETON — The Lady Bulldogs played host to Salemburg Lakewood High last Thursday with the Carolina 1A Conference volleyball title on the line.
In JV action, the two teams were well-matched and neither was able to open up a significant lead. But in the end, the Lady Dawgs came out on top in two straight sets (25-20, 25-18) despite some scrappy play by the Lady Leopards. The win allowed the JV Lady Bulldogs to finish their season undefeated in conference play.
The competitive and scrappy play continued when the varsity Lady Bulldogs took the court. The first set was a back-and-forth affair in which both teams saw solid scoring runs. The Lady Dawgs ended the first set 25-19. The second set went a little more Princeton’s way as the Lady Dawgs took a 2-0 advantage with a score of 25-11.
The third set was even more competitive than the first. Neither team was able to gain more than a point or two advantage over its opponent throughout most of the set. The Lady Bulldogs finally managed to string together multiple scores to come away with a 25-20 win.
The straight-set victory gave the Lady Bulldogs an undefeated conference record and the Carolina 1A Conference regular-season championship.
With multiple scheduling issues created by the recent hurricanes, the Carolina 1A Conference tournament had to be canceled. That means the next action for both the Lady Leopards and the Lady Bulldogs will come in the NCHSAA state playoffs, which begin this week.
