NEWTON GROVE — The Princeton High School varsity boys and girls cross country teams each won the 1-A conference championship in 5,000-meter runs Oct. 16 at Hobbton High School.

“I think that both teams ran well and several of the runners had their personal best times,” said coach Mark McLamb. “But overall, everyone finished about where we expected.

McLamb said Princeton went there with the expectation of wining the championship.

Eleven Princeton runners earned All-Conference honors. They are Veronica Blackman, junior; Adam Casey, sophomore; Brook Connolly, sophomore; Ruthie Hester, sophomore; Luis Martinez, senior; Silvia Perez, sophomore; Emily Rubio, sophomore; Gray Thomas, sophomore; Shelby Thompson, sophomore; Zeb Whitley, junior; and Lane Woodall, senior.

“Almost all the girls are sophomores and we look to keep improving the next two years in hopes of maybe being one of the better teams in the region,” said McLamb. “We are graduating our top two boys, Lane and Luis, so we have to do some recruiting and work hard if the boys can repeat as conference champions next year.”

The Bulldogs ran a total time of 1:40:16. The Lady Bulldogs’ total time was 2:06:57.

The regional championships are Saturday, Oct. 27 at Wake Med Soccer Park in Cary.
