Holding, Rouzer retain congressional seats

SMITHFIELD–Election night on Tuesday sent two Johnston County congressmen back to Washington.

U.S. Rep. George Holding (Republican-District 2) defeated Democrat Linda Coleman, 166,035 (51%) to 148,572 (46%). Libertarian Jeff Matemu received 9,367 (3%). Holding won his fourth term in office.

U.S. Rep. David Rouzer (Republican-District 7) defeated Democrat Kyle Horton, 155,705 (56%) to 119,606 (43%). Constitutionalist David Fallin received 4,599 votes (2%). Rouzer won his third term in office.

Republican congressional wins in North Carolina did not prevent Democrats from seizing control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Democrats now hold 220 seats, Republicans have 193 seats. 218 seats are needed for a majority.
