WENDELL — The Corinth Holders girls basketball team fell 41-35 to Clayton High in its season-opener on Monday night.
By the end of the first quarter, the Comets had built up a 10-point lead that largely stayed in tact the whole game.
Down the stretch, though, the Pirates finished the game on a 13-8 run to make the game much closer by the end than it had been.
Three players — Crawford Ramsey, Abby Gallons and Deonna Adams — led Corinth Holders with eight points each.
The Pirates will travel to Smithfield-Selma on Tuesday.
Pirate boys fall in opener
WENDELL — The Corinth Holders boys basketball team could not keep up with the pace of Clayton, and fell 71-56 in its season opener.
The Pirates scored the first basket of the game, but quickly gave up the lead to the Comets and trailed 15-7 after the first quarter. A few quick baskets brought the game with four points, before Clayton lengthened out its lead to 35-27 at the half.
In the second half, the Comets ran away with the game, falling behind by 19 by the end of the third quarter.
Justin Stephens led the Pirates with 20 points, while Marcus Bland added 11.
Smithfield-Selma will host Corinth Holders on Tuesday.
Cougars down East Wake
ZEBULON — Trailing 13 in the third quarter, the Neuse Charter boys basketball team rallied all the way back to beat East Wake Academy 75-68 on Friday night on the road.
The Cougars were led by freshman Sire Holmes with 22 points. Jacob Denton and Jamir Ledbetter added 13 points apiece, while Salah Tucker contributed 11 points and Aiden Phillips added three.
The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday hosting Rocky Mount Preparatory Academy at 7 p.m.
Lady Chargers blow out Eagles
ZEBULON — The Neuse Charter girls basketball team blew past East Wake Academy on Friday night, beating the Eagles 58-13.
Freshman Anna Taylor scored a team-high 21 points in the victory, while senior Dargan Harris was just behind her with 20 points. Daja Staten also contributed 11 points.
Neuse Charger will host Rocky Mount Prep on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
