SMITHFIELD — Affinity Living Group, one of the Southeast’s largest senior housing providers, has 16 new projects in the works, including a 66-bed, 29,000-square-foot secured assisted living community in Smithfield.

Hickory-based Affinity Living Group will open the doors to The Landings of Smithfield and five other new assisted living communities this year.

“Providing the best life for our residents is our top priority at Affinity Living Group,” said CEO Charles Trefzger. “Our newest communities across the Southeast will allow us to do that while serving a new population of individuals in areas where assisted living is needed.”

The Landings of Smithfield, at 200 Kellie Drive, is nearing completion and is expected to welcome its first residents this summer. The community will offer 42 assisted living beds along with 24 secure-care beds.

In addition to traditional assisted living services, The Landings of Smithfield will be secured with extra safety features like sensors and exit alarms to prevent wandering, or “exit-seeking,” behavior. “The Journey,” an ALG signature program, will provide additional care for residents with memory impairments, including special assistance with daily tasks, unique dining experiences and activities for people at all levels of ability.

The Landings of Smithfield joins five other ALG communities opening in the coming months.

The Berkeley, in Morganton, is a 62-bed, 31,761-square-foot community that will begin welcoming residents this month. The Landings of Cabarrus, a 66-bed, 34,870-square-foot-community in Kannapolis, and The Gardens of Nashville, a 62-bed, 55,127-square-foot community in Nashville, are all slated to open for residents this summer. Together, these new communities will bring about 135 jobs across North Carolina.

Indigo Hall, a 157-unit, 120,000-square-foot resort-style community in Charleston, South Carolina, will welcome residents in July. The Landings of Montgomery, a 63-bed, 26,500-square-foot community in Montgomery, Alabama, is an acquisition that has been remodeled and updated to better serve its residents.

“Our company is continuously pursuing new development projects and acquisitions,” said Warren Boatman, senior vice president of development. “It’s an exciting time for expansion and growth at ALG.”

ALG has secured plans to build 10 additional communities across North Carolina, in areas including Lake Lure, Hendersonville, Wilkes County and New Bern.

Lake Lure will be home to a 31,000-square-foot, 62-bed assisted living community. The community is expected to bring at least 55 jobs to Rutherford County.

In Swansboro, ALG plans to build an 80-bed assisted living community, with plans for 60-bed communities in Reidsville, Sparta, Hertford and Littleton. Each of these planned communities are expected to bring at least 45 jobs to their respective areas.

“With all of the developments we have coming up, we will be well over 140 communities,” said Trefzger. “We’re proud of what we have built. This is part of our long-term strategy to become the preeminent provider of assisted living and memory care in the U.S.”
