SMITHFIELD— A crash Monday afternoon at West Market Street and Durwood Stephenson Parkway claimed the life of a Clayton man, the Smithfield Police Department reported.
A preliminary investigation found that a Mercedes SUV turned into the path of a Nissan SUV just after 3:30 p.m., Capt. Ryan Sheppard said Tuesday morning.
The driver of the Mercedes, Elva Santiago, 32, of Clayton, was trying to turn left from westbound Market Street into Rose Manor shopping center, Sheppard said. But she turned in front of the Nissan’s driver, Gilbert Barakat, 71, of Clayton, who was eastbound Market Street, he said.
The impact forced the Nissan into a utility pole, Sheppard said.
The crash killed Barakat and seriously injured a passenger, Barbara Barakat, 67, also of Clayton.
Santiago and two children in her SUV suffered minor injuries, Sheppard said.
The crash is under investigation, he said.
