BENSON — The Benson Area Chamber of Commerce and Benson Area Ministerial Association are teaming up to make sure area children have the school supplies they need.

The distribution event for needy kids is set for 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Benson Fire Department. Before that can happen, the chamber and ministerial association need area residents to step up and donate.

Last year, the drive reached 100 families and 311 children, giving them the chance to head back to school with plenty of supplies to start them off on the right foot.

“That is a special day,” chamber Director Loretta Byrd said. “Those children have a sparkle in their eye and are just as excited about school starting as you were when you were a child growing up.”

Byrd said her personal experiences have been nothing short of joyful and heartwarming. She said each year, the happiness the children get is simply amazing to watch and she encourages residents to take the time to volunteer for the distribution.

“It warms your heart to work this event,” she said. “So, if you are available that Saturday morning, Aug. 17, please come join us.”

Byrd said the chamber will be the drop-off point for supplies and monetary donations.

“If you would purchase some items and drop them off at the office, we would appreciate it,” Byrd said.

Donations will be accepted at the chamber office until Monday, Aug. 12.

Items being sought include 3-inch and 1-inch binders, one-subject composition notebooks — both spiral bound and marbleized, pencils, pens, pencil pouches, pink and cap erasers, blunt scissors, glue sticks, markers, colored pencils, crayons, dry erase markers, 3- by 5-inch index cards, highlighters, binder dividers and wide-ruled notebook paper.
