SELMA — Authorities say a man shot and killed his roommate Sunday in the rural Johnston County home the men shared.

Johnston County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to 7529 Buffalo Road north of Selma to assist Johnston County Emergency Medical Services at 6:47 p.m. Deputies found 66-year-old Vondell Bethune deceased and determined he had been shot, sheriff’s Lt. Don Pate said in a Monday news release.

Detectives identified Bethune’s roommate, 50-year-old Alvin Demetrus Harris, as a suspect in the case. Harris turned himself in to the sheriff’s office, Pate said.

Harris was charged with murder after detectives interviewed him, according to the sheriff’s office.

Pate said the killing remained under investigation Monday. Authorities have not released a motive in the fatal shooting.
