FOUR OAKS — Sheriff’s deputies have charged a man with murder in a fatal Friday shooting at a rural Johnston County home.

Authorities were called to a shooting at 6350-A Devils Racetrack Road southeast of Four Oaks at 12:14 p.m. and found 21-year-old Jacob Whaley of Strickland’s Crossroad Road deceased, Capt. Jeff Caldwell of the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Investigators determined 37-year-old Adam Clayton Stewart fired the fatal shot, Caldwell said. A motive in the killing has not been disclosed.

“No further arrests are expected,” Caldwell said in the release. “However, additional details regarding the case are not being released due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.”

Stewart lives on the same street as Whaley — Strickland’s Crossroad Road outside Four Oaks — but deputies say the suspect and victim have different addresses.

Deputies arrested Stewart on an open count of murder. He was booked into the Johnston County Detention Center in Smithfield without bond pending his initial court appearance.
