FOUR OAKS — A balanced attack and a big second half gave the North Johnston girls basketball team a 39-24 season-opening victory over host South Johnston of the 3-A Greater Neuse River Conference on Friday night.
The Panthers were led by Imoni Hines with nine points and 12 rebounds, while five others chipped into the victory. At halftime, North Johnston held onto a tenuous 17-15 lead after an evenly-matched first half, but held the Trojans to just two points in the third quarter to take control of the game for good.
After a nine-point effort in the third quarter, the Panthers scored the most of the game in the final quarter to close out the victory. South Johnston was outscored 22-9 in the second half and struggled from the free throw line. The Trojans made just 5-of-21 shots from the charity stripe.
North Johnston defeated Franklin Academy on Tuesday and will resume play on Tuesday, Dec. 3 hosting Rosewood in its home opener.
