Smithfield detective named Officer of the Year

SMITHFIELD — Detective Sgt. Dale Wood is the Smithfield Police Department’s 2018 Officer of the Year.

Police Chief Keith Powell presented the award at the April 9 Smithfield town council meeting.

Wood is a member of the the police department’s investigative unit and has been with the department since November 2000.

Before joining the Smithfield police, Wood served for eight years with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and two years with the Benson Police Department.

Wood started in Smithfield as a patrol officer and was later promoted to sergeant.

“Sgt. Wood has worked very hard in investigations and handled many difficult cases during his tenure in law enforcement,” said Powell. “He’s always professional with the victims he deals with on a daily basis.”

Powell said Wood is always willing to help new recruits with difficult cases.

“Sgt. Wood is a major asset to the Smithfield Police Department and the town of Smithfield,” said Powell.

Wood plans to retire next year.
