SMITHFIELD — After storms canceled the second annual Smithfield River Rat Regatta in July, organizers have rescheduled the cardboard boat race for 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17.

The race starts at the Front Street Boat Ramp in Smithfield and continues to the U.S. 70 bridge.

Entrants consist of two-person teams in boats that must be constructed entirely from corrugated cardboard, glue and duct tape. There are youth and adult divisions and registration is required at a cost of $25 per team. Thirty of 50 openings were remaining as of Sunday.

Smithfield Parks & Recreation, the Downtown Smithfield Development Corp., the Smithfield Police Department and the Smithfield Fire Department are sponsoring the race, which will also feature food trucks and music from the Justin Kyle Band.
